Published in Sept/Oct 2007

Years old, married with two children & one grandchild, but another due in November! Born in Ilford, but moved to Essex Road, Leyton in 1956, where my dad (86 years young) still resides. Married to Glynis in 1974 @ St. Paul’s Church in Essex Road, which was demolished & is now part Barclay Nursery & part Cornerstone centre. I have lived in Chesterfield Road since 1981, so am very much a Leyton man, although I work as an Administration Manager for a Dutch-owned company in Brentwood, Essex. I have always loved sport, especially cricket & football. As a boy, I vividly remember walking down to the county ground in the High Road to watch Essex, as until the late 1960’s this was their main home ground. I have supported Leyton Orient since my dad first took me to Brisbane Road in 1957, so vividly remember the promotion to Division 1 in 1961-62 & of course all the relegations since then!! I played Hockey for the Old Loughtonians for over 30 years, ending up in the veterans & finally retiring 3 years ago – age having finally caught up with me. My great passion is Amateur Theatre & I am a member of local drama groups, Wadham Players & Global Theatre Company and have just returned from a great week performing at the famous Minack Theatre in Cornwall. Having lived in the same house for over 25 years, I have of course, seen a number of changes. It is true to say that 25 years ago, I knew most of the people in the surrounding houses, but now, I only know my next door neighbours; that is perhaps the saddest aspect, and I feel that we are now living in our own little “boxes”, instead of a community or neighbourhood. On the plus side, Chesterfield is a nice quiet road, with very little (if any) crime & the only problems we have is finding somewhere to park in the evening, as our road get lots of visitors’. As an AmDram enthusiast, I am appalled by the fact that our borough of Waltham Forest has no theatre space, of any kind; all we have is the odd council run hall, which are so expensive to hire, as to make it absolutely impossible for a small drama group with no funding to be able to put on a show. The council then close the halls (Chingford Assembly Hall, Lloyd Park etc), due to lack of use!!! Surely, it would not be impossible to build a multi-use space to exhibit & develop all the diverse cultural activities that abound in the borough, thus helping to foster an understanding of these different cultures & help make us a “community”, rather than a lot of different “communities!”

Blowing It
by
Claude Fontanelle

Issue 7 - Sept/Oct 2007
When you’re lying in your lonely bed
Knocking the truth in your confused head
Just think twice over what you did
What was done and what was said
Did he promise never to leave
Or was that just a myth
You wanted to believe

Was he using you or were you using him?
Was he taking advantage or just giving in?
If he won’t have a thing to do with you
Who’s laughing? Who’s crying?
Who’s fooling whom?

Ask for love but don’t expect to get it
It’s better to live life to the full, not regret it
The selfishness you accuse of him
Might sometimes be your own unspoken sin
Who’s taking advantage?
Who’s given in?
So don’t run around shouting ‘he did me wrong’
If he’s no longer with you
He never did belong

Their World

by
Saira Ahmed

Issue 8 Nov/Dec 2007

We feed the animal that is within us
We feed the hunger through others weakness
slowly picked, slowly grafted

Blinded by the 'world' that's crafted
trusting media, the telly, the radio

Brains storing false hopes and news
making no room for an opinion or voice
Leaving us without the freedom of choice
The more we get, the more we want
The more we make, the more we take

Our spirits and passions are dying inside
Afraid of being the one to confide

Open your eyes to see the masked affairs
Open your ears to hear that silent cry
Lend your hand to the innocent that falls
Seal the lies when they do call

Being afraid is something we fear
Trusting and believing will never compare
Let the world teach you things as we are
nothing but guests
War, poverty, power, control all needs to be at rest
